10 ਯਿਸੂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਬਾਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਚੇਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੋਲ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਸ਼ਾਂਤਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਹਰ ਕੱ andਣ ਅਤੇ ਹਰ ਬਿਮਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਬਿਮਾਰੀਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਅਧਿਕਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ।

Matthew 10v1-16 Wise as Serpents and Gentle as doves
Discipleship consists of calling and sending. Jesus calls us and sends us. In this passage in Matthew there is also a theme of engagement and withdrawal. There is a time to engage and a time to withdraw. God’s mission is a lifestyle, loose to places and possessions. Discipleship and mission depends on hospitality for sustenance. Sharing is at the heart of Gods work. Sharing our food and what we have.
They disciples in Matthew’s account were sent out to have authority over the powers of darkness. They were Christ's representatives as we are. They work in pairs including Matthew the tax collector who wrote this gospel. And Judas was included. Jesus gave them their orders. The mission is to the Jews. Later it will be to non-Jews as we see in Acts. They are sent to the lost sheep, the spiritually lost.
The message that the disciples are to communicate is the same one Jesus and John preached and for all to see in the Beatitudes in Matthew 5 and 6. They are to travel light.
The Jews would give a blessing “Let your prayer for God's blessing rest upon the household. Let your peace come upon the home" but Jesus says if they reject you let your peace return to you. Shake the dust off your shoes and leave.
The times were and are dangerous. It is a hostile world. Jesus like the good shepherd is sending his sheep, us, into a pack of wolves. To survive the disciples needed to be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Don’t attract trouble unnecessarily. But be careful. Jesus calls for balance. They are for the first time called apostles or messengers. There will be persecution and they will be accused.
Households, families are the base for Gods work.
Jesus called them and us, to heal the sick, cast out demons, cleanse the unclean, to feed people, to forgive sins-and to raise the dead, to minister to the lost.
We must be wise like a snake and gentle like a dove. We are like sheep before circling wolves and the times are treacherous. There is division and polarisation.
The times are apocalyptic, like the end times.
The battle raging is at the heart and soul of what we believe and our values. What we believe in, our ideas, our ideology is being tested. Do we believe in caring for one another or do we believe that some people are less important because of age, infirmity, colour or religion? Fascists believe in the nation state and in ethnic purity, one race over others. But we are the people of God and God loves diversity. God puts at the centre. Not the nation or country or its monuments.
There are deep divisions. There are people who oppose everything we as Christians stand for. The enemy is however subtle.
The devil or Satan is described in the Bible as the Accuser, the Adversary, in Job 1v6, who is looking for good people to smear and destroy. He relies on lies and distortions of the truth, (John 8v44) and he loves performance (Luke 4v1) and is divisive. Where God is at work the devil is lurking.
In these dangerous times we need one another to distinguish between angels and beasts, to resist the wiles of the devil, because we have been through a wilderness time and both are present. Angels, beasts and Satan. We need to pray. The Word of God, texts of scripture, need to be in our thoughts and on our tongues. Know when to engage and when to withdraw. Pray for God’s Word to be given to you in times of crisis.
We are like sheep before wolves. Be wise as serpents and gentle as doves. Trust in God. Amen.
