Reflection on Luke 12v49-56

This passage in Luke is about the kingdom and judgment, and signs of the age – division. There is reference to Micah 7:6 and the "last days".Although we have the inner peace of God, we do not have peace on earth. We face division at work, with friends and family. Division is the main theme, but the overarching theme is judgment. There is reference to the "fire" of the coming kingdom, the "fire" of judgment, sharply dividing us.

Jesus has come on a mission and his coming brings fire in other words judgment.  Fire is a dominant Old Testament image of judgment.

Jesus says “I have a baptism to undergo”, this word being used in a metaphorical sense. In fact, it is quite possible that most uses of the word in the New Testament are metaphorical. Here baptized or immersed means suffering, the suffering of the cross.

Jesus is very distressed until his job, his mission is completed. And there will be no relief for Jesus until this suffering is over. He aligns himself with the true prophets when he reminds us that "the good news" has a sting; for many it's bad news! Truth today is a rare commodity. It is smothered by politicians, the media, the newspapers, the TV channels. People will do anything rather than allow the truth to be heard. The truth of corruption, of climate change, of the sufferings of the poor.

Jesus comes to bring division or a sword as in Matt.10:34. The sense is of separating the sheep from the goats, the wheat from the chaff, the repentant from the unrepentant. It is a present social separation. There will be fractured relationships, families, households will be divided, one against another, but, one generation against another.

Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division!

Jesus is naming the reality that was around him.  His presence in the world, God’s presence, was unsettling and it was a time of disruption and division.  It was to be a time of upheaval. By Jesus connecting his words about fire and division with the issue of reading the signs of the times Jesus is drawing attention to the unrest that was caused by his presence.

The end goal of God’s presence in the world is not in the division but in what the angels sang about and what Jesus declared after his resurrection: Peace. Shalom!  Though he says he did not come to bring peace in the moment of his lifetime, the fulfilment of God’s promise in him is Peace.

The imagery of ‘fire’ is used here by Jesus to hearken back to the Old Testament and the images of ‘fire’.  Some of these images point to a time of purification which was to come.  The image of ‘fire’ is not the hellfire of punishment but the fire of purification; the refiners fire. Like when you heat a metal until it is liquid and take off the impurities that rise to the surface. That’s a bit like our lives. In the worst situations a purification takes place and we remove things that are tarnishing us.

Jesus was purified through his death and resurrection. So Jesus is also speaking of the baptism of suffering that he has to go through, his suffering and death.  His death however was not about division but about reconciliation, of us to God and us to one another.

Jesus is not affirming family breakdown and the disruption of relationships between children and their parents, nor affirming and encouraging division but naming what he saw around him. We should not use this passage to condone division between one another, in our families, our congregation, or across the world.  Division is the mark of the ungodly, not us! We are to be people of peace. To walk in the shoes of the gospel of peace.

We too can read the signs around us. We may experience fire and division but we remember that God’s peace is where we are headed. Let us live as people of God’s shalom, receiving gratefully forgiveness when we fall short and celebrating and making God’s peace where we are. Amen

We pray for people and situations we are concerned about …Ending with…May we not fail them Amen

Pentecost 10 Matthew 15:10-28 (see also Mark 7:1-23) , what defiles us; Cananite woman, crumbs from under the table

The first part of the passage is about things that defile you-make you unclean. The Jews had long lists of foods you couldn't eat. Pharisees were religious Jews who practiced ritual purification. They refused to eat food from the market because it had been contaminated by unclean hands. Some Christians today feel the same about Sikh, Hindu, Muslim and Buddhist foods-sacrificed to idols they will say.

The Jews of Jesus day observed many other traditions which included even the washing of beds. There is a difference today between Orthodox Jews who still keep some of the laws and Liberal Jews who dont.

The Pharisees and Scribes question Jesus in order to trap him out. They refer to the traditions of the elders. Jesus sees them as hypocrites, grasping and perverting their traditions. They get out of laws concerning their parents who they are supposed to honour by deception. The funds, denied to the parent, can be accessed by the son. The Pharisees have given greater weight to their traditions than to God's law-they are legalists.

Jesus then moves his attention from the Pharisees to the crowd, from specific arguments to parables. Spiritual defilement is not caused by contamination from unwashed hands or anything, eg. contact with a dead body, or bodily fluids, foods.... HIV (kissing someone with Aids).

Jesus is not actually demolishing the purity code in Leviticus 15, nor the image of purity required of God's people as illustrated in the food laws, but rather the foolish notion that a person can, by the careful observance of external purity law, be declared holy. It's what comes from within that defiles us. The food that you put into your mouth doesn't make you unclean and unfit to worship God.

Taken literally, Jesus is saying that food don't defile us. The disciples come to Jesus privately for an explanation of the riddle because of course his interpretation was an offence to legalism,  the Pharisees. Jesus declared all foods clean. Purity is a matter of the heart/mind. Evil thoughts - greed, covetousness with a sexual connotation, lust, lewdness, indecency, envy, jealousy, foolishness, stupidity come from within us. They and our actions, defile us.

In the following chapters Jesus engages with Gentiles on the issue of holiness but here Jesus engagement is with Israel's religious elite. The burning issue of table fellowship between Jewish believers and Gentile believers is in the background. Table fellowship is not possible where people are judged on the ground of a breach in holiness.

The next story shifts the focus to Jesus' ministry in Israel. He encounters a Canaanite woman, unclean to the Pharisees, an outsider not worthy of consideration. Matthew reminds us that the issue of a person being ceremonially clean or unclean, of being a Jew or a Gentile, is irrelevant.  It was the quality of the woman's faith that saved her, not any religious credentials.

This story is extremely important in that it heralds a change. The Pharisees are defective in their understanding of their written holy tradition and offended by the conduct of Jesus and his disciples. The focus moves to someone outside Israel, a pagan woman, a descendant of the ancient enemies of Israel.

Jesus left  Galilee, and went to the border district of Tyre and Sidon. Possibly the woman lived in the border region and came out of her home to meet Jesus. Jesus keeps silent and the disciples ask that she be sent away.

He answered her that he had come to save the lost sheep of Israel, lost in the sense of perishing .

The woman came and knelt before him. He said Is it right to deprive the children and toss it to the dogs, probably a house dog in contrast to a street dog. The imagery here is of children = Jews, and dogs = Gentiles. Jews viewed Gentiles as dogs.

The woman disagrees with what Jesus has said, explaining that actually the dogs do get to eat, the scraps that fall from the table.

Jesus is challenged and delighted by her faith. Your request will be granted he said. From that hour, her daughter was healed.

No one is outside of Gods love or excluded from the household of God.

August 21st 2011, Pentecost 10, Matthew 16:13-20, Ordinary 21

My grandfather has always been a man of shadows, a mystery man. A while ago I decided to Google his name and came up with a real person, who went to Westminster School, studied theology at London University through The Jews College in London, and became a principal of a college in Ramsgate. His name was Samuel. He was my grandfather who I never met.

Who do people say you are? I heard about a black woman who applied for a job. She didnt get it and rang up to ask why not. They left the phone on speaker phone and she heard them say "What shall I say to that black woman who applied for the job?" She was a black woman. I also met a man who had a daughter with schizophrenia. He told me a harrowing story of how he had struggled with this. He was a father with a daughter with schizophrenia. The story in Matthew is set in Banais on the Israel Lebanese border or Caesarea Philippi as it was called then, rebuilt by Herod Philip and renamed as Caesarea. It is beautiful spot with fallen statues to Greek gods. As they were walking Jesus was reversing the normal practice of disciples asking rabbis questions."Who do people say that I am?" The gossip was that Jesus was John the Baptist come back to life, or a raised-up Elijah (the greatest of all prophets), or possibly just another prophet, but not the Jewish messiah. It was a devalued assessment of Jesus' person. "But who do you say I am?" "You're the Christ" said Peter, the anointed one, the messiah because he had caught a glimpse of this reality. But Jesus wants this secret kept and keeps, a low profile with regard his messianic credentials to dampen popular political messianic aspirations, for those "with eyes to see". He warned them that they should not mention this to anyone.

Peter is blessed/fortunate", in the terms of a spiritual blessing, Bariwna "son of Jonah" - bar-Jona. Matthew gives Peter's family name in the form of a transliteration of the Aramaic "son of Jonah". The name is from the Akkadian word which means "terrorist", so Matthew is alluding to Peter's Zealot background. You are Peter as opposed to Simon, petra/ (a) fem. dat. "rock" - a large stone, a large hewn stone. Jesus gives this name to Simon son of John/Jonah as a nickname.  Peter is the rock and Jesus is the builder.

In the Old Testament the phrase "the gates of Hades" refers to death/evil, Job.17:16, Isa.38:10 etc. When assaulted by the gates of Hades - the fortress of evil, the evil empire, Jesus is promising that the church will stand against the powers of darkness. Hades is the underworld or death. It will not overcome the church. (North Africa)

keys– Peter is given the keys to the kingdom as a servant is given the keys to the house. The servant is the managers of God's house, having authority over his house; The giving of keys means the bestowing of authority, of power and  control.

Binding and Losing-
1.A Jewish rabbinical sense where "bind" = forbid, hinder, restrict, and "loose" = permit, The church on earth carries out heaven's (God's) decisions.
2. A legal technical sense where "bind" = put in fetters, and "loose" = acquit. Peter, and by implication all who confess the faith, have authority, to exercise divine judgment through the gospel.
3.A theological sense describing the binding of Satan / demonic powers and of losing / releasing people from the bondage of evil.
4. An ecclesiastical sense, of retaining and forgiving sins. The authority spoken of, then, is in effect that of being able to declare whether a person becomes fully a part of the community or not.

Sometime ago I met a black woman who was a Pentecostal bishop working mentoring young men out of gun crime and a Baptist minister called by God to work with Muslims because of riots. Most appropriate I think this week!

So what are you called to be to make a change in our world, a world of social division and riots? What is your special place in Gods kingdom however humble?
