Reflection on Luke 10v1-11

Jesus now sends out 70 others in addition to the twelve disciples on a mission beyond. Seventy was the traditional Jewish number for the nations of the world. They were to go in pairs. In Jewish culture the testimony of two witnesses settles a matter.  They were to go as heralds to those villages and towns and places that Jesus intended to visit.

The times are urgent and they are to rely on prayer and leaning on God. But it will be dangerous. These Seventy were like lambs in the middle of wolves.

There may have been a pattern with wandering Jewish patterns but Jesus gives it a unique touch. They were to just go without packing. Can you imagine just going on away without packing! They are to carry no money! No foreign currency. They were not to take spare clothes or shoes.

And they are to be focused and concentrate on their task, to greet no one. Don’t go visiting friends and relatives. They had work to do.

Where they are welcomed they are to give their peace, their blessing, Gods Shalom, to the household. God’s peace will be on him or her. This was normal practice for a first century Jew. The peace gives God's eternal peace upon those who are people of peace, Gods people are people of peace. Peacemakers. Those who turn from their ways will be blessed.

They were to accept the hospitality of households and eat whatever was set before them, in other words ignore Jewish dietary laws. Food will have ranged from the basics of a poor family to the strict food requirements maintained in the home of a Pharisee. Mission depends on good hospitality!

They are to show by your actions, healing people and by telling them the good news that the kingdom of God has come near to you.

They are to go into the streets, squares and market places.

For people who are hostile or negative they are to shake the sand off your sandals and leave. Replicating some Jews who shook off the dust off his feet when leaving Gentile territory.

The mission is mixed in its effect but they come back rejoicing. Authority has been given to them to trample on snakes and scorpians, the devils minions.

The times are no less urgent and no less dangerous. We are Gods peacemakers, we have a narrative to share and good news and we need to celebrate together over food and to share healing. And to live a simple lifestyle.  Amen

We pray for our world our families and friends.

Eles tinham trabalho a fazer.

Pentecost 4, Mark 4 v 35-41, Jesus calms the storm

From his throne on the shore at Bosham, Sussex, Canute, the 11th-century Danish king of England, addressed the sea: "You are subject to me, as the land on which I am sitting is mine, and no one has resisted my overlordship with impunity. I command you, therefore, not to rise on my land, nor to presume to wet the clothing or the limbs of your master."

His feet got wet! Even in the 21st century, we can't command the seas.
In this story the disciples and Jesus are leaving the crowd on the beach where they had been standing while Jesus had been using the stern of the boat to speak to them. They get in the boat and are going to the east side of the lake.
A storm picks up (Galillee is like a wind tunnel), and it starts to whip up the sea and the boat is filling with water. The disciples wake Jesus up because he is asleep on a leather cushion in the back of the boat. Dont you know we are drowning they shouted. They were panicking.
Jesus sternly commands the storm to be stilled, to pipe down (its the same word he uses when confronting the evil spirit). He asks them why are they so afraid!. Dont you even yet have faith! he says. There is then this incredible calm.
The story is about confronting the powers, as is the next story in the gospels. At that time they believed that destructive powers were in the sea. And Jesus called the lake the sea. Jesus has to confront these destructive powers.
The story is about a cosmic reconfiguration by Jesus.
The crossing from Jewish to Gentile territory is also significant. It is the bridging of Jewish and Gentile worlds. A new departure. This is the journey between the two. It fits between stories either on the Jewish side or the Gentile side. In our lives there are times when life kicks up a storm and we are afraid. We are very afraid and Jesus is telling us to do two things
1. Take command of what is destructive in our lives. Recognise and control it.
2.TRust that God is with us even in the really scary stormy times.

Pentecost 4 Matthew 11:16-30 Luke 10v12-15, My yoke is easy and my burden is light

John the Baptist has sent his disciples to ask Jesus whether he is the expected Messiah. Jesus has invited John to decide for himself: does he not do deeds of healing as foretold of the Messiah in Isaiah? John, Jesus has said, is indeed a prophet, the messenger sent to prepare for the Messiah, foretold in Malachi, and there called Elijah.
This passage is made up of two themes, the condemned and the little ones. There is the condemnation of the unrepentant cities and the call to of the weary. Jesus has warned his disciples of the troubles they will face and this seems to be standard in Israel at that time reflected in the judgement on the unrepentant cities.
This part of the passage is also in Luke 10:12-15.

The source of the passage may be three sayings;
Condemnation of Israel
Description of the rejected Messiah and his authority
A call to the little ones

Most of  Jesus' signs and wonders happened in the cities he denounces. They did not repent and believe, an important couplet. Korazin is mentioned only here and in Luke 10. It was a village 2 miles from Capernaum
and thought to be the present town of Khibet-Keraseh. Tyre and Sidon were important coastal cities north of Israel, cities which traded with Israel.

The kingdom is like setting a riddle which the intellectuals would miss, but which little children would workout. The little children, little ones are the humble, those who rely on God's grace rather than their own
status or just their Jewish birth rite Jesus says that to all those who are weary and suffering, oppressed and with heavy burdens I will give rest you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me for I am gentle and lowly at heart and I will give you rest for your souls for my yoke is easy and my burden light.

This is the key text. Jesus is alluding to the double yoke of cattle in Palestine, still used in many countries which joined too beasts together and so made the work easier.  A deceased Anglican priest called Gordon Barker who was a great healer used this text for healing-leaning on God,
remembering that God is with you and so giving an inner peace and a platform for healing.

Pentecost 4 Gerasene demoniac Luke 8v26-39

Dark powers stilled

The story of the Gerasene demoniac is of a cosmic confrontation between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of Satan, a confrontation played out in the ministry of Jesus and in our lives. It follows Jesus' stilling of the storm. Both stories image the powers of darkness and the defeat of those powers.
When Jesus stepped ashore a man from the city having demons, who previously lived in the village nearby. (mental health issues?),when he saw Jesus, he began to scream out, fell at his feet (lunged at).
He said “I beg you”.“What do you want with me" Jesus replied- what to me and to you. A Semitic expression, what do we have in common.
The demons in the man recognise Jesus as the Son of the most high God.The dark powers are well aware of Jesus' divine origins.“Don't torture me” (lit. twisting) imposed by a court to extract a confession, inflict punishment. Voldemort. The man knows he has met his match.
Many times this power had seized him (epilepsy?) - though he was chained bound with chains and fetters. The people had bound him with chains and fetters to make him safe. But he had broken his chains and been driven into wilderness.
Jesus asked him "What is your name?" - This is the only record of Jesus having a conversation with demonic powers. The man answered "Legion" - The evil powers have identified who they are, but not their names. A Roman legion consisted of some 5,000 soldiers. The man had many demons-just as Mary had many. They begged him not to send them to the “Abyss" – a very deep, the underworld, dwelling place of Satan. Luke probably thinks the depths of the sea is the abyss.
There is a large herd of pigs grazing on the hillside. The demons begged him to cast them into them.
When the demons came out, the herd rushed down the cliff and drowned (the shouting?).
Those tending the pigs reported this to others as they were scared. The villagers and farming community went out to see what had happened. When they reached Jesus, they saw the man, sitting having been dressed and being of sound mind, seated at the feet of Jesus (The image here is of a disciple).
They were afraid. The scene is one of calm; the pigs gone, the man sane, and so the townsfolk are afraid!
The eyewitnesses (swine herders) told the people that the demon-possessed man was healed/saved. For Luke, a healing=salvation.
And the people asked Jesus to leave them! He left and returned to Galilee.
The man begged to go with him but he sent him away saying, “Return home to your own community. So he went away and all over the town and witnessed to his healing.
