Reflection- Hard Times
Life sometimes throws us into terrible situations. They are not of our choosing but simply because of who we are or what we believe, people despise us.
Jesus didn't begin his ministry until after John was arrested. Miraculous powers followed Jesus, but not necessarily the disciples. John didn't perform any miracles but Herod missed this. King Herod ruled from 4BC-39AD over the areas of Galilee and Peraea. The people thought that Jesus was another Elijah who prepared the way of the Messiah, or that he was a prophet like Elisha.
Herod hears the different opinions and gives his. He thinks he is John the Baptist, who he beheaded, raised from the dead. Herod had sent guards to seize John, had him bound and put in prison. Josephus the Roman historian wrote that John was imprisoned in the Machaerus a fortress in Peraea.
Because of Herodias.
Under Roman law Herodias was legally able to divorce her husband Philip, but under Jewish (Levitic) law, Herod was not permitted to marry his brother's wife. Herodias was bitter against John and so she had him arrested. John had told Herod that he had no right to marry his brother's wife. So Herodias wanted to kill him.
But Herod had a respect for John as well as a fear and had listened to him.
Finally, Herodius got her chance. Evil people love a gap in the fence like foxes. Salome danced a sexual erotic dance. John is the victim, Herodius is the bully, Herod is the one with power who was set up, Salome was used by her mother. John's disciples, now mostly Jesus' disciples buried him.
People with responsibilities have to make difficult decisions. And decisions have consequences. The Old Testament gives us the injunction from God to choose life.
In our story Herod like Pilate after him has to make a series of difficult decisions. The decisions he makes are all compromised. Compromised by political unrest, by power brokers (the Jews) and by his wife. Some people in society act as moral beacons. John the Baptist was such a man. We need such people. Can you think of any?
Herod’s decision about John the Baptist is swayed by lust. His lust is disgusting but very present in our world too. His decision results in the death of a good man. But all decisions have consequences. Maybe he didn’t sleep so well that night!
Our own moral well being depends on making good choices but its not easy. Sometimes we are forced into a corner like Herod. At times like this we have to do the best we can to repair the situation. Even saying sorry to someone you’ve wronged is healing. Christians should be the first to apologize. Our decisions affect us mentally and physically, affect our society and the world. WE must choose loving constructive decisions. Even in the face of threats and bullies and sometimes death. Our well being depends on it! Amen

Refleksi- Masa Sulit
Hidup terkadang melemparkan kita ke dalam situasi yang mengerikan. Mereka bukan pilihan kita tetapi hanya karena siapa kita atau apa yang kita yakini, orang-orang membenci kita.
Yesus tidak memulai pelayanannya sampai setelah Yohanes ditangkap. Kuasa mukjizat mengikuti Yesus, tetapi belum tentu para murid. Yohanes tidak melakukan mukjizat apa pun tetapi Herodes melewatkan ini. Raja Herodes memerintah dari 4BC-39AD atas wilayah Galilea dan Perea. Orang-orang mengira bahwa Yesus adalah Elia lain yang mempersiapkan jalan Mesias, atau bahwa dia adalah seorang nabi seperti Elisa.
Herodes mendengar pendapat yang berbeda dan memberikan pendapatnya. Dia mengira dia adalah Yohanes Pembaptis, yang dipenggalnya, dibangkitkan dari kematian. Dikompromikan oleh kerusuhan politik, oleh makelar kekuasaan (Yahudi) dan oleh istrinya. Beberapa orang dalam masyarakat bertindak sebagai suar moral. Yohanes Pembaptis adalah orang seperti itu. Kami membutuhkan orang-orang seperti itu. Bisakah Anda memikirkannya?
Keputusan Herodes tentang Yohanes Pembaptis dipengaruhi oleh nafsu. Nafsunya menjijikkan tetapi sangat hadir di dunia kita juga. Keputusannya mengakibatkan kematian orang baik. Tetapi semua keputusan memiliki konsekuensi. Mungkin dia tidak tidur nyenyak malam itu!

Reflexión- Tiempos difíciles
La vida a veces nos arroja a situaciones terribles. No son nuestra elección, pero solo por quiénes somos o por lo que creemos, la gente nos odia.
Jesús no comenzó su ministerio hasta después de que arrestaron a Juan. El poder milagroso siguió a Jesús, pero no necesariamente a los discípulos. Juan no hizo ningún milagro, pero Herodes se perdió esto. El rey Herodes gobernó desde el 4 a. C. hasta el 39 d. C. sobre los territorios de Galilea y Perea. La gente pensaba que Jesús era otro Elías que preparó el camino del Mesías, o que era un profeta como Eliseo.
Herodes escuchó diferentes opiniones y dio su opinión. Pensó que era Juan el Bautista, a quien decapitó, resucitó de entre los muertos. Herodes había enviado guardias para arrestar a Juan, atarlo y encarcelarlo. El historiador romano Josefo escribió que Juan fue encarcelado en Machaerus, una fortaleza en Peraea.
Por Herodías.
Según la ley romana, Herodías podía divorciarse legalmente de su esposo Felipe, pero según la ley judía (Leví), Herodes no podía casarse con la esposa de su hermano. Pero Herodes tenía respeto por Juan, además de temor, y lo había escuchado.
Finalmente, Herodio tuvo su oportunidad. A la gente mala le encantan los huecos en las cercas como a los zorros. Salomé baila un baile erótico sexual. Juan es la víctima, Herodio es el matón, Herodes es el gobernado, Salomé es usada por su madre.

Las personas con responsabilidades tienen que tomar decisiones difíciles. Y las decisiones tienen consecuencias. El Antiguo Testamento nos da un mandato de Dios para elegir la vida.
En nuestra historia, Herodes es como Pilato después de tener que tomar una serie de decisiones difíciles. Todas las decisiones que tomó se vieron comprometidas. Comprometido por los disturbios políticos, por los agentes del poder (judíos) y por su esposa. Algunas personas en la sociedad actúan como faros morales. Juan el Bautista fue una de esas personas. Necesitamos gente así. ¿Puedes pensarlo?
La decisión de Herodes sobre Juan el Bautista estuvo influida por la pasión. La lujuria es repugnante pero también muy presente en nuestro mundo. Su decisión resultó en la muerte de un buen hombre. Pero todas las decisiones tienen consecuencias. ¡Quizás no durmió bien esa noche!
Nuestro propio bienestar moral depende de tomar buenas decisiones, pero no es fácil. A veces nos vemos obligados a arrinconarnos como Herodes. En momentos como estos debemos hacer lo mejor que podamos para remediar la situación. Incluso disculparse con alguien a quien has lastimado es curativo. Los cristianos deberían ser los primeros en disculparse. Nuestras decisiones nos afectan mental y físicamente, afectan a nuestra sociedad y al mundo. DEBEMOS elegir decisiones amorosas y constructivas. Incluso frente a amenazas y matones y, a veces, a la muerte. ¡Nuestro bienestar depende de ello! amén
