Reflection
Like Thomas we are often in the wrong place at the wrong time and because of it we miss out on something special and we could kick ourselves for being so stupid. How many times have you done that? I know I have.
The disciples were scared. Jesus had died. Despite their experience they were scared. And they had so much faith that they locked themselves in an upper room for weeks!
Jesus appeared to them. Breathed on them! The breath of God. And he gives them his peace. But Thomas was not there!
Soon after Jesus appears through closed doors again, when Thomas is with them. He asks Thomas to feel his wounds in his hands and side. This isn’t a ghost! Thomas was lucky. We don’t have that experience.
The story of Thomas doubting is one of a number of resurrection stories. In all of them Jesus appears. In all of them he gives his peace and in all of them the setting is in the context of eating. We could say it is Eucharistic. When we eat bread and drink wine Christ’s body is reconstituted, brought to life in us and we encounter Christ’s resurrection.
All of us have times when we doubt the existence of God.
A Frenchwoman I knew said I don’t believe in God but I shout at him now and then! Even Job doubted. It seems to be part of our human condition that when things go wrong or maybe we get very comfortable, we doubt God. How can we believe in a loving God when bad things like happen? Doubt is the flipside to belief.
The Psalmist cries "My God why have you hidden your face from me" in Psalm 22 and Jesus from the cross cries "My God why have you forsaken me?"
During the pandemnic, many of us were hid behind closed doors because we had to! And we were afraid. We doubted God was with us. Sometimes we did not feel it or see Gods presence.
Unlike Thomas we cannot feel the wounds in Jesus body. Our faith depends on things unseen and unfelt. At times of doubt others have to carry us. Especially in these times we need one another, we need their prayers, we need to hear the words of Jesus, to feel the touch of the God of creation. Going outside helps. Hearing other people’s voices and presence helps. Amen.
May God’s hand be upon us, your angels protect us and the Holy Spirit work in and around us. Amen

Lezen: Johannes 20v19-31
Reflectie
Net als Thomas zijn we vaak op de verkeerde tijd op de verkeerde plaats en daardoor lopen we iets bijzonders mis en kunnen we onszelf voor de gek houden omdat we zo stom zijn geweest. Hoe vaak heb je dat gedaan? Ik weet dat ik dat heb gedaan.
De discipelen waren bang. Jezus was gestorven. Ondanks hun ervaring waren ze bang. En ze hadden zoveel vertrouwen dat ze zichzelf wekenlang opsloten in een bovenkamer!
Jezus verscheen aan hen. Adem op hen! De adem van God. En hij geeft ze zijn vrede. Maar Thomas was er niet!
Kort daarna verschijnt Jezus weer door gesloten deuren, als Thomas bij hen is. Hij vraagt Thomas om zijn wonden in zijn handen en zijde te voelen. Dit is geen geest! Tomas had geluk. Wij hebben die ervaring niet.
Het verhaal van Thomas die twijfelt is een van een aantal opstandingsverhalen. In allemaal verschijnt Jezus. In allemaal geeft hij zijn rust en bij allemaal is de setting in de context van eten. We zouden kunnen zeggen dat het eucharistisch is. Als we brood eten en wijn drinken, wordt het lichaam van Christus opnieuw samengesteld, in ons tot leven gebracht en komen we de opstanding van Christus tegen.
We hebben allemaal wel eens momenten waarop we twijfelen aan het bestaan van God.
Een Française die ik kende, zei dat ik niet in God geloof, maar ik schreeuw zo nu en dan tegen hem! Zelfs Job twijfelde. Het lijkt deel uit te maken van onze menselijke conditie dat als er iets misgaat of als we ons erg op ons gemak voelen, we aan God twijfelen. Hoe kunnen we in een liefdevolle God geloven als er slechte dingen gebeuren? Twijfel is de keerzijde van geloof.
De psalmist roept uit: "Mijn God, waarom hebt u uw gezicht voor mij verborgen" in Psalm 22 en Jezus vanaf het kruis roept: "Mijn God, waarom heeft u mij verlaten?"
Tijdens de pandemie zijn velen van ons achter gesloten deuren verborgen omdat het moest! En wij waren bang. Wij betwijfelden of God met ons was. Soms voelen we het niet en zien we Gods aanwezigheid niet.
In tegenstelling tot Thomas kunnen wij de wonden in het lichaam van Jezus niet voelen. Ons geloof is afhankelijk van onzichtbare en onvoelbare dingen. In tijden van twijfel moeten anderen ons dragen. Vooral in deze tijden hebben we elkaar nodig, we hebben hun gebeden nodig, we hebben het nodig om de woorden van Jezus te horen, om de aanraking van de God van de schepping te voelen. Naar buiten gaan helpt. Het helpt om de stemmen en aanwezigheid van anderen te horen. Amen.
Moge Gods hand op ons zijn, uw engelen beschermen ons en mag de Heilige Geest in en om ons heen werken. Amen
