Reflection on Matthew 5v1-12
 
Jesus ascends to a high area where people have come from miles to hear his teaching and to be healed. And he taught them;

Jesus uses the word blessed in a totally different way. It is not the elite who are blessed. It is not the rich and powerful who are blessed. Rather, Jesus pronounces God's blessings on the lowly; the poor, the hungry, the crying, and the hated. Jesus turns it all upside-down. The elite in God's kingdom, the blessed ones in God's kingdom, are those who are at the bottom of the heap of humanity.

Verse 9 reads Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called the children of God. 

My father was a professional naval officer. I was grew up in a house belonging to the Navy. There were maps in the boardroom on the first floor. My dads naval cap hung on a peg. He was called up for the Korean war when I was little. I was brought up understanding war. 

Years later as a new urc minister in the early 1990s, I was sent as part of  a Peace Delegation to Northern Ireland. I had to wear my dog collar at all times I was told. We were in Belfast in a large room where we were being welcomed by the Presbyterian Church of Ireland. A wizened old man appeared before me and I was vaguely aware he was telling me a story. His name was Reverend Jack Weir. He and his friend Reverend Martin Smith had been praying for Peace in Northern Ireland. At that time ecumenism was a swear word. But Jack and Martin prayed and became convinced they needed to meet with Martin Macguiness and Gerry Adams. They asked to meet with them and were turned down but persisted. Eventually they were granted an audience and they met many times and these meetings made a platform for discussions to resolve the Troubles in Northern Ireland that went on for 30 years. There perseverance led to the Good Friday Agreement. You van read about Jack Weir online. He was regarded as a traitor at the time. But he was Gods Peacemaker.

I was attending a large event and wandered into a photography exhibition. There were large print of two people and a narrative about what linked the two people. The photo I was looking at was a young black man and an older grey haired man. The young black man had shot the white man, who was a policeman in a robbery. The bullet was in his neck at the top of his spine. The policeman lay in his hospital bed anfd thought of the young man and prayed for him. He miraculously reovered and went to visit the young man in prison. They met many times and formed an organisation helping young people caught up in crime. You can read about it on The Forgiveness Project website. The policeman was one oF Gods Peacemakers. 

Over twenty years later I was leaning against a large tent pole at Greenbelt Christian festival in Boughton House. I was waiting for a friend. It was a hot day. There was a talk going on in the tent between a grey haired man and a younger woman. The younger woman was Jo Berry, the daughter of Sir Anthony Berry who was killed in the Brighton bombing. Jo had struggled with her grief after her dads death. She decided she needed to meet the man who detonated the bomb that killed her father. She contacted the IRA and they refused her an audience but after 3 requests she met Patrick Magee in a Dublin safe House. There were minders. The conversation was difficult. Eventually she looked him in the eye and asked him why he had done it. He told the minders to go and they had an honest conversation. They met many times again and formed a Peace making organisation called Building Bridges for Peace that is still in operation today. Jo Berry is related to Princess Diana and fell out with her family over her Peace making work. She is one of Gods Peacemakers. 

These three stories have commonalities. 

1. In all three a grave injustice has been done and lives lost

2. In all three one of the wronged party has turned from hate to listen to the offender. 

3. In all three cases there were obstacles to that peace process.

4. In all three examples the wronged persons bravery led to serious ongoing peacemaking.

In our own lives there is potential for hatred and division. In our country there is a grat deal of hatred and division. In the world there is a great deal of hatred and division but Jesus says Blessed are the Peacemakers for they are the children of God. 

Im not pretending its easy.It isn’t. Diplomacy, mediation at any level is very hard and there are people who have vested interests in keeping the hostilities going.  But today I wonder if we can think of one situation where we can be the peacemaker and potentially change the situation.  Jack Weir probably hated Gerry Adams but he went to see him. 

I am deeply challenged by these stories and the text “Blessed are the Peacemakers for they are the Children of God. Amen

马太福音5:1-12反思

耶稣升到高处，那里的人们从四面八方赶来，聆听他的教诲，寻求他的医治。他教导了他们。

耶稣对“蒙福”一词的用法截然不同。蒙福的并非精英，也并非富人和权贵。相反，耶稣宣告上帝的祝福临到卑微的人：贫穷的、饥饿的、哭泣的、被憎恨的人。耶稣彻底颠覆了一切。在上帝的国度里，真正的精英，蒙福的人，是那些处于人类社会底层的人。

Reflexão sobre Mateus 5:1-12

Jesus sobe a um lugar alto, onde pessoas vieram de longe para ouvir seus ensinamentos e serem curadas. E ele as ensinou.

Jesus usa a palavra "bem-aventurados" de uma maneira totalmente diferente. Não são os ricos e poderosos que são bem-aventurados. Em vez disso, Jesus proclama as bênçãos de Deus sobre os humildes: os pobres, os famintos, os que choram e os odiados. Jesus inverte completamente essa perspectiva. A elite no reino de Deus, os bem-aventurados no reino de Deus, são aqueles que estão na base da hierarquia da humanidade.

O versículo 9 diz: "Bem-aventurados os pacificadores, porque serão chamados filhos de Deus".

Não estou fingindo que é fácil. Não é. Diplomacia e mediação em qualquer nível são muito difíceis, e há pessoas com interesses em manter as hostilidades. عیسی به مکانی مرتفع صعود می‌کند، جایی که مردم از کیلومترها دور برای شنیدن تعالیم او و شفا یافتن به آنجا آمده‌اند. و او به آنها تعلیم داد؛

۳. ثروت و فقر، هر دو در نظم جهانی بشر، موقعیت‌های نسبی مبتنی بر اعتبار و بدهی هستند. سلطنت خدا شامل رهایی از بدهی و بخشش گناه است. انجیل‌های متی و لوقا در زبان اعتبار-بدهی غنی هستند. متی مسائل گناه و بدهی را از طریق «مَثَل بنده‌ی بی‌گذشت» عیسی به هم پیوند می‌دهد.
 
کلمه «بخشیدن» در یونانی، aphiemi، به معنای «رها کردن»، «رها کردن» است که هم برای گناهان و هم برای بدهی‌ها استفاده می‌شود. در هر دوزبان یونانی و انگلیسی، کلمات گناه و بدهی معانی مترادفی دارند. دنیای بدهی‌ها فراتر از اقتصاد است. هر روشی که ما به عنوان انسان به یکدیگر آسیبمی‌رسانیم، بدهی دیگری را نشان می‌دهد که انتقام "تاوان" آن است. بخشش با رهایی از بدهی، آن چرخه آسیب رساندن را می‌شکند. نظم جهانی بشرمبتنی بر بدهی و انتقام است؛ نظم جهانی خدا مبتنی بر رهایی از بدهی‌ها است.
 
برای ما، چنین فراخوانی برای زندگی در یک نظم جدید، مانند فراخوانی برای رها کردن امتیازات نظم جهانی به نظر می‌رسد. چنین فراخوانی به عنوانیک مصیبت ظاهر می‌شود، نه یک نعمت. ما برای فقرا چه می‌کنیم و آیا اصلاً می‌دانیم آنها چه کسانی هستند؟ کلمه‌ای که در متن برای تسلی استفاده شدهاست، کلمه مالی است. یک تساوی وجود خواهد داشت. آمین
