Jesus says "I am the Way", and so we come to follow Christ.

Jesus says "I am the Light", and so we come, leaving all else behind, to which we cling.
Reflection on Matthew 2v13-23
For Mary and Joseph, the consequences of caring for their baby, meant becoming asylum seekers and refugees. The Christmas story moves from the gentleness of the incarnation to the harsh reality of life.
Joseph and Mary flee Bethlehem and their people and go to a strange land that did not know them. They became aliens, immigrants forced to flee. For the families in Bethlehem and surrounding communities the consequences were much worse. Small children were slaughtered because a ruler was tricked by some wise elders from a distant tribe. There was blood everywhere. The consequence of human anger with access to absolute power is clear in our Gospel today and reminds us of the responsibility we have to the innocent and those seeking asylum from tyrant rulers.
We are called to witness in this same world, full of terror, in which angry leaders still destroy innocent lives. Jesus came into the midst of terror and enters into our terror. And we, like Mary and Joseph, are called to move out from soft places, from warm rooms and safe havens, to the places where innocents are destroyed and carry God incarnate, to strange places. God in us, empowers us to listen to angels, to turn away from the comforting familiar.
Here is our call, our responsibility this Christmastide and all through the year. God encourages us to face the powerful, to protect the vulnerable and the needy. God challenges us to see his face in each refugee, each immigrant, every stranger. The Prince of Peace calls us to look away from the comfortable and to see the suffering and terror in our world. Christmas is a time not just of looking in and being with our families but also of looking out, seeking the family which has been left outside, bringing home those who are refugees and strangers.
As God works around us this year it will be with the same mix of divine intervention, danger and tragedy as the Christmas story. But be sure that God will be at work despite everythingin the tragedies and the terrors as well as in the good times.
Our prayers for others
Loving God, though we are fickle and full of doubt. In you we place our trust for the year ahead. We commit ourselves again to serve you as best we can, to serve also those around us, to seek justice and peace and care for the earth, to forgive others and to be used by your Spirit, to bring more love to our corner of the world, and so to be your people on earth. For Christ's sake. Amen.

Para Maria e José, as consequências de cuidar de seu bebê significaram se tornarem solicitantes de asilo e refugiados. A história do Natal transita da delicadeza da encarnação para a dura realidade da vida.
José e Maria fogem de Belém e de seu povo para uma terra estranha que não os conhecia. Tornaram-se estrangeiros, imigrantes forçados a fugir. Para as famílias de Belém e das comunidades vizinhas, as consequências foram muito piores. Crianças pequenas foram massacradas porque um governante foi enganado por alguns anciãos sábios de uma tribo distante. Havia sangue por toda parte. A consequência da ira humana com acesso ao poder absoluto é clara em nosso Evangelho de hoje e nos lembra da responsabilidade que temos para com os inocentes e aqueles que buscam asilo de governantes tiranos.
Somos chamados a testemunhar neste mesmo mundo, cheio de terror, no qual líderes enfurecidos ainda destroem vidas inocentes. Jesus veio em meio ao terror e entra em nosso terror. E nós, como Maria e José, somos chamados a sair de lugares confortáveis, de quartos aconchegantes e refúgios seguros, para os lugares onde inocentes são destruídos e levar Deus encarnado, para lugares estranhos. Deus em nós nos capacita a ouvir os anjos, a nos afastarmos do conforto familiar.
Eis o nosso chamado, a nossa responsabilidade neste Natal e durante todo o ano. Deus nos encoraja a confrontar os poderosos, a proteger os vulneráveis e os necessitados. Deus nos desafia a ver o Seu rosto em cada refugiado, cada imigrante, cada estrangeiro. O Príncipe da Paz nos chama a desviar o olhar do conforto e a enxergar o sofrimento e o terror em nosso mundo. O Natal não é apenas um tempo para olhar para dentro e estar com nossas famílias, mas também para olhar para fora, buscar a família que foi deixada de lado, acolher aqueles que são refugiados e estrangeiros.
Enquanto Deus age ao nosso redor neste ano, será com a mesma mistura de intervenção divina, perigo e tragédia da história do Natal. Mas tenha certeza de que Deus estará agindo apesar de tudo, nas tragédias e nos terrores, assim como nos bons momentos.

Deus amoroso, embora sejamos inconstantes e cheios de dúvidas. Em Ti depositamos nossa confiança para o ano que se inicia. Renovamos nosso compromisso de servir-Te da melhor maneira possível, de servir também aqueles que nos rodeiam, de buscar justiça e paz e cuidar da Terra, de perdoar os outros e de sermos usados pelo Teu Espírito, de trazer mais amor ao nosso canto do mundo e, assim, sermos o Teu povo na Terra. ما در همین دنیای پر از وحشت، که در آن رهبران خشمگین هنوز جان بیگناهان را نابود میکنند، فراخوانده شدهایم تا شهادت دهیم. عیسی در میان وحشت آمد و وارد وحشت ما شد. و ما، مانند مریم و یوسف، فراخوانده شدهایم تا از مکانهای نرم، از اتاقهای گرم و پناهگاههای امن، به مکانهایی که بیگناهان نابود میشوند و خدا را مجسم میکنند، به مکانهای عجیب و غریب برویم. خدا در ما، ما را قادر میسازد تا به فرشتگان گوش فرا دهیم، از آشنایان آرامشبخش روی بگردانیم.
این است ندای ما، مسئولیت ما در این کریسمس و در تمام طول سال. خداوند ما را تشویق میکند تا با قدرتمندان روبرو شویم، از آسیبپذیران و نیازمندان محافظت کنیم. خداوند ما را به چالش میکشد تا چهره او را در هر پناهنده، هر مهاجر، هر غریبه ببینیم. شاهزاده صلح ما را فرا میخواند تا از راحتیها چشم برداریم و رنج و وحشت را در دنیای خود ببینیم. کریسمس نه تنها زمانی برای نگاه کردن به درون و بودن با خانوادههایمان است، بلکه زمانی برای نگاه کردن به بیرون، جستجوی خانوادهای است که در بیرون رها شدهاند و کسانی را که پناهنده و غریبه هستند به خانه میآورند.
همانطور که خداوند امسال در اطراف ما کار میکند، با همان ترکیبی از مداخله الهی، خطر و تراژدی مانند داستان کریسمس خواهد بود. اما مطمئن باشید که خداوند علیرغم همه چیز، در تراژدیها و وحشتها و همچنین در اوقات خوب، در کار خواهد بود.
